Disney+ has started to identify and block users who share their passwords with friends or family members in exchange for access to the streaming service. This comes after the company increased its focus on combating password sharing, which it claims is costing it significant revenue.
The crackdown includes the use of AI-powered technology to detect suspicious activity, such as multiple devices accessing a single account from different locations. Users who are found to be sharing passwords will receive an email asking them to verify their identity and link their account to a different device or location.
Disney+ has stated that its goal is to ensure fair access to the service for all subscribers, while also protecting its business model. The company claims that password sharing is worth “millions” of dollars to it each year.
It’s worth noting that Disney+ has not explicitly stated what consequences users will face if they continue to share their passwords after being asked to verify their identity. However, the company may implement additional measures such as limiting access to certain features or content, or even account suspension.
